If you've come this far and decided rats are the right pets for you, here's a handy checklist to get you started.

  • Name and address of a local vet experienced in caring for rats
  • Cage
  • Bedding
  • Exercise wheel, 12" (optional, but highly recommended)
  • Litter box and potty litter (if you plan to use one)
  • Hanging water bottle, glass, or plastic with metal guard holder
  • Food, laboratory block
  • Food dish, ceramic or glass (optional, but recommended)
  • Chew toys, assorted
  • Hut, cave, igloo, or similar hiding place
  • Soft bed, hammocks, tubes, etc.
